Metro53 - LAHORE: Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan has said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) will decide whether to support or oppose the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment only after reviewing its clauses in detail.
Speaking during a briefing marking the completion of his two years as governor, Mr Haider highlighted various public welfare initiatives and administrative measures undertaken during his tenure. A special documentary showcasing his two-year performance was also presented on the occasion.
The governor said constitutional amendments should always serve national interests. He recalled that the PPP had previously raised objections to certain clauses of the 26th Amendment, which were later amended after consultation.
“If a new constitutional amendment is introduced, the party will form its opinion only after carefully examining its contents,” he stated.
Commenting on local government elections, the governor said immediate local body polls in Punjab did not appear likely. He also remarked that no powerful individual could claim to remain in a position indefinitely.
Discussing relations with the provincial government, Mr Haider described differences with the Punjab government as an “internal matter,” adding that he did not wish to escalate disagreements as part of a coalition setup.
He further said that despite being an active political figure, he continued to perform official duties until late at night and had cleared all pending appeals at the Governor House.
On university affairs, the governor suggested that greater administrative powers regarding universities should rest with the Governor House, arguing that interference from the Higher Education Department and the Chief Minister’s Office often delayed decision-making.
