According to sources in the Punjab government, Rao Abdul Kareem has been entrusted with the responsibility in place of Dr. Usman Anwar. Rao Abdul Kareem is considered a seasoned officer in the police service and has previously served in several key positions. He possesses extensive experience in both field operations and administrative affairs. Government sources stated that the appointment has been made keeping in view the overall law and order situation, police reforms, and governance requirements.
Meanwhile, sources in the federal government have indicated that Dr. Usman Anwar may soon be assigned a new important role. Reports suggest that he is likely to be appointed as Director General of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), although no final announcement has been made so far. If confirmed, Dr. Usman Anwar would assume leadership of a key federal institution.
Dr. Usman Anwar was appointed IG Punjab in January 2023. During his tenure, he focused on improving the police system, crime prevention, and the use of modern technology. Under his leadership, Punjab Police conducted various operations; however, issues such as law and order, political pressure, and public complaints also remained under discussion. While some circles appreciated his performance, he also faced criticism on several occasions.
For the newly appointed IG Punjab Rao Abdul Kareem, the biggest challenge will be to further improve the law and order situation in the province, effectively control crime, and strengthen discipline within the police force.
