Metro53 - Islamabad (Web Desk): Significant progress has been reported in negotiations between Somalia and Pakistan regarding the purchase of 24 modern fighter aircraft.
According to media reports, Somalia is holding high-level discussions with Pakistan to acquire JF-17 Thunder fighter jets. Sources say the proposed deal includes the procurement of up to 24 JF-17 aircraft and is valued at approximately PKR 251 billion (around USD 900 million).
Negotiations are primarily focused on the advanced Block-III variant of the JF-17, which features upgraded avionics and combat capabilities. If finalized, the agreement would mark a major step toward restoring Somalia’s air combat capability following the collapse of the state in 1991.
Reports suggest the defense package may include pilot training, weapons integration, and long-term logistical support in addition to the aircraft supply.
Sources further indicate that Saudi Arabia and Turkey may potentially provide financial assistance for the deal. Pakistan has previously supplied JF-17 fighter jets to Myanmar, Nigeria, and Azerbaijan, while Bangladesh and Iraq have also expressed interest.
Defense experts believe that if the agreement is concluded, it could have a notable impact on the regional security balance in Africa.
