Metro53 - Lahore (Web Desk) — An important meeting chaired by Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Chief Minister of Punjab, discussed key measures to protect the province from floods.
During the meeting, relevant departments gave a detailed briefing and various steps were reviewed to prevent flood-related destruction.
It was decided that all illegal encroachments in flood zones will be removed within three months and the areas will be cleared. It was also announced that those who construct illegal buildings in water channels will not receive any government assistance. The Chief Minister directed authorities to ensure a complete ban on construction in river passages and ordered continuous monitoring. Maryam Nawaz Sharif stated that construction in riverbeds would be permanently stopped.
The meeting also agreed on a proposal to build 17 mini dams across Punjab to improve water management and flood protection. Meanwhile, the feasibility report for constructing a dam in Chiniot has been completed and has received initial approval. The Chief Minister also directed the introduction of inflatable dam technology.
In addition, it was decided to increase the storage capacity of water reservoirs at Kalabagh and Sadhnai. The meeting also approved the restructuring of Provincial Disaster Management Authority and the creation of eight new wings. Approval was also given for establishing District Emergency Operation Centers, Regional Disaster Centers, and warehouses.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister approved the provision of modern equipment to Rescue 1122 for flood operations.
During the briefing, officials informed that 563 kilometers of roads affected by floods, 446 bridges, and one additional bridge have already been restored in Punjab. Authorities also warned that rainfall this year may increase by 28 percent, which could raise the risk of flooding.
