Metro53 - New Delhi (Web Desk) — A fighter jet of the Indian Air Force crashed in the northeastern Indian state of Assam during a training mission, killing both pilots on board.
According to the Indian Air Force, a Sukhoi Su-30MKI took off from the city of Jorhat at 7:42 pm local time on Thursday. Later, contact with the aircraft was lost. It was subsequently confirmed that the jet crashed in the Karbi Anglong area, about 60 kilometers from Jorhat.
Following the incident, the Indian Air Force issued a statement on social media saying that search and rescue operations were launched immediately and further details were being collected. According to reports, the aircraft did not return at the scheduled time and was declared missing after contact was lost, prompting an immediate search and rescue mission.
It is worth noting that the Indian Air Force has faced several fighter jet accidents in recent times. About ten days ago, a HAL Tejas was severely damaged after skidding off the runway during landing at an airbase. Earlier, in November last year, another Tejas aircraft crashed during a demonstration flight at the Dubai Airshow, resulting in the death of its pilot.
The Sukhoi Su-30MKI is a twin-engine multirole fighter aircraft developed by Sukhoi. It is equipped with Indian, French, and Israeli avionics and weapon systems. The aircraft was inducted into the Indian Air Force in the early 2000s and is considered one of its most powerful frontline fighters.
