Metro53 - Gujrat (Web Desk): Residents of three villages along the banks of the Chenab River have staged a strong protest over fears that nearly 2,500 acres of agricultural land could be washed away due to ongoing sand mining activities.
According to details, people from the suburban areas of Lange, Chak Gul, and Nawan Lok in Gujrat protested against the sand mining contract. Locals said heavy trolleys and dumpers carrying sand are passing through residential areas, damaging roads, houses, and crops while putting women and children at serious risk.
Residents warned that if sand extraction is not stopped immediately, around 2,500 acres of fertile land could be swallowed by the Chenab River, threatening the livelihood of hundreds of families dependent on agriculture.
During the protest, women also expressed strong anger and demanded immediate action. They urged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Federal Minister Chaudhry Salik Hussain, Provincial Minister Chaudhry Shafay Hussain, and the district administration to take notice and cancel the sand mining contract.
Locals further warned that if urgent measures are not taken, the upcoming monsoon season could bring severe flooding and cause even greater destruction in the area.
