Metro53 - MADRID: At least 30 people have been killed after two high-speed trains collided on the railway line connecting Madrid to the southern region of Andalusia. Authorities are currently assessing the exact number of injuries and investigating the cause of the disaster.
According to news agency reports, Spanish rail operator ADIF confirmed the incident on Wednesday, stating that high-speed train services between Madrid and Andalusia have been suspended following the crash.
A spokesperson for the regional government stated that the accident occurred shortly after 9:00 AM local time when trains operated by Renfe and Iryo collided. As a result of the impact, two carriages of the Iryo train derailed.
A regional government official confirmed at least 39 fatalities, though authorities noted that verified confirmed deaths currently stand at 30, with further figures being evaluated as rescue operations continue.
Footage from the scene shows derailed train carriages, twisted metal sheets, and wreckage scattered along the railway tracks.
Manuel Galán, Mayor of the nearby town of Urda, mentioned that emergency services reached out to local administration to set up emergency facilities, including preparing a local sports hall to accommodate passengers and the injured.
Reports highlight that a similar high-speed train collision occurred on the same railway line in January this year, resulting in 46 deaths. That earlier incident sparked widespread debate regarding railway line maintenance and investment. However, the exact cause of this latest crash has not yet been determined.
