Metro53 - LAHORE: Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani of the Lahore High Court (LHC) has stepped down from his position, citing personal reasons, health issues, and the "call of conscience" in his resignation letter.
During his judicial career, Justice Kayani decided over 23,000 cases. In his resignation statement, he expressed that the 26th and 27th Constitutional Amendments have severely compromised the independence and institutional autonomy of the High Courts.
Justice Kayani stated that public trust in the independence of the judiciary and the judicial system has been severely damaged, adding that the difficulties faced by litigants are mounting while those seeking justice are being neglected.
"My conscience does not permit me to continue my duties as a judge under current circumstances," wrote Justice Kayani. He announced plans to return to legal practice to protect public rights and foster legal awareness.
Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani was appointed as a judge of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on December 23, 2015.
In April this year, he was transferred from the Islamabad High Court to the Lahore High Court following approval by the Judicial Commission. During the same meeting, the Judicial Commission also approved the transfers of Justice Babar Sattar to the Peshawar High Court and Justice Saman Rafat Imtiaz to the Sindh High Court.
