Metro53 - NEW DELHI: A major road in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad has been renamed “Donald Trump Avenue”, a move that has triggered political debate and drawn attention both within India and abroad.
According to reports, the road is located near the United States Consulate and several offices of major American technology companies, including Microsoft, Google and Amazon.
US President Donald Trump acknowledged the development in a social media statement, describing it as a unique honour and expressing gratitude for the gesture. He said no previous American president had received a similar tribute.
The state of Telangana, where Hyderabad is located, is governed by the Indian National Congress. Political observers noted that former US presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush had visited Hyderabad during their respective tenures, while Mr Trump has yet to visit the city.
The decision has drawn criticism from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which accused Congress of political inconsistency and described the move as hypocritical.
The development comes at a time of evolving diplomatic dynamics between the United States and South Asia. Analysts have pointed to recent trade and tariff disputes between Washington and New Delhi, which have contributed to tensions in bilateral relations. At the same time, discussions on regional cooperation and economic engagement continue among the countries involved.
The road renaming has generated mixed reactions on social media, with supporters describing it as a symbolic recognition of US-India ties, while critics have questioned the rationale behind honouring a foreign leader who has never visited the city.
