Metro53 - GUJRAT: The district administration and the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) remained on high alert after Gujrat received 100 millimetres of heavy rainfall since last night, prompting a large-scale emergency drainage operation across the city.
Deputy Commissioner Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi, accompanied by WASA Managing Director Kashan Hafeez Butt, visited various parts of the city and inspected disposal stations to review the ongoing drainage efforts.
The officials assessed the situation at key locations, including Jail Chowk, Kutchery Chowk, Nawabzada Chowk, Prince Chowk, and Fawara Chowk, where rainwater had accumulated following continuous monsoon showers.
According to officials, 18 emergency field teams have been deployed across Gujrat's three operational zones and are working round the clock to ensure the swift removal of rainwater. Assistant Commissioner Abdul Qadeer Zarkoon and Director Engineering Sheikh Abdul Wahab also accompanied the inspection team.
Meanwhile, Deputy Managing Director WASA Faisal Hasnain Bhalli has been monitoring the operation from the agency's central control room. All disposal stations are operating at full capacity, while dewatering sets, suction machines and heavy machinery have been deployed in low-lying areas to accelerate drainage.
Authorities said pumping operations would continue without interruption as long as rainfall persists. The district administration and WASA have jointly decided to maintain a 24-hour field operation, with additional machinery stationed at vulnerable locations.
Officials have directed all officers and field staff to remain on alert until the weather improves. Under the city's Monsoon Emergency Plan, continuous monitoring of the drainage system is underway to minimise disruption and provide timely relief to residents affected by waterlogging.
Deputy Commissioner Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi instructed all departments concerned to ensure that accumulated rainwater is cleared from roads and residential areas in the shortest possible time to reduce inconvenience for the public.
