Metro53 - Scarlett Johansson’s voice, along with that of her co-star Adam Driver, in the 2019 film Marriage Story, is being used to scare off wolves from attacking livestock and killing cattle in America.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the United States Department of Agriculture is trialling a series of disturbing sounds to startle wolves away from livestock, with the sound of humans arguing as one of the prominent examples.
As such, the climactic scene from the Oscar-nominated movie, in which Johansson and Driver’s characters scream at each other as their marriage breaks down, is being used alongside a number of pieces of loud music, including ‘Thunderstruck’ by AC/DC.
A district supervisor for Oregon in the Department of Agriculture justified the move by stating: “I need the wolves to respond and know that, ‘Hey, humans are bad’.”
The publication reported that the practice of ‘wolf hazing’ seems to be a success so far, being implemented after 11 cows were killed by wolves in Southern Oregon over the course of a 20-day period.
However, since audio such as Johansson and Driver’s famous argument scene has started being played in the farm fields via drones over the subsequent 85 days, only two further cattle were killed under similar circumstances.
This has given Marriage Story a further reason for acclaim, six years on from its original release. The Noah Baumbach-directed film featured Johansson and Driver as they entered into a difficult divorce and custody battle over their child, with both actors gaining Oscar nominations for their respective performances at the time.
Alongside this, it was nominated for four other Oscars, including ‘Best Picture’ and ‘Best Supporting Actress’, the latter of which Laura Dern won for her role in the film.
