Metro53 - Jhelum: The District Health Authority Jhelum organized an awareness seminar and walk at the District Health Development Centre (DHDC) to mark World No Tobacco Day, aiming to educate the public about the harmful effects of tobacco use and promote a healthier lifestyle.
Addressing the seminar, District Health Officer Dr. Jawad Ahmed and DHDC Program Director Dr. Nisar Khalid highlighted the serious health risks associated with tobacco consumption. They stated that smoking is a leading cause of heart disease, lung disorders, cancer, and several other life-threatening illnesses.
The speakers emphasized that continuous public awareness campaigns are essential for building a healthy society and reducing tobacco use, particularly among young people. They reaffirmed the Health Department’s commitment to achieving a tobacco-free society through sustained educational and preventive initiatives.
A large number of health officials, medical staff, and citizens participated in the awareness walk, carrying placards and displaying messages against smoking to spread awareness among the public.
Similar seminars and awareness walks were also held at all Tehsil Headquarters Hospitals (THQs) and Rural Health Centres (RHCs) across Jhelum district. The activities focused on informing people, especially the younger generation, about the dangers of tobacco and encouraging healthy living habits.
Health authorities reiterated that preventing tobacco use remains a key public health priority and called on citizens to play their part in creating a healthier and smoke-free future.
