Metro53 - NIAMEY: At least 50 people have died of thirst after their truck broke down in the Sahara Desert in Niger, leaving passengers stranded in extreme heat with limited supplies, according to international media reports.
Citing a foreign news agency, reports said the victims were returning from Mali after the Eidul Adha holidays when their vehicle became immobilized in a remote desert area.
Authorities said the passengers were unable to obtain assistance as temperatures soared across the region. The truck’s water supply was eventually exhausted, leading to multiple deaths from dehydration and exposure.
Only two people survived the ordeal. According to reports, they managed to walk across the desert and reach a nearby settlement, where they alerted authorities to the tragedy.
The Sahara Desert, one of the world’s harshest environments, is known for its extreme temperatures and vast stretches of uninhabited terrain, making rescue operations particularly difficult in remote areas.
Officials are continuing efforts to recover bodies and investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
