Metro53 - GUJRAT: Torrential rain accompanied by thunderstorms inundated Gujrat city and its surrounding areas on Monday, severely disrupting daily life and raising fresh concerns over the district administration's preparedness and urban drainage infrastructure.
According to local reports, rainwater accumulated on the GT Road near Hariya Wala, slowing the flow of traffic and causing significant inconvenience to commuters.
Several major roads, including Jinnah Road, Circular Road, Chowk Nawab Sahib, Jail Chowk, and Rehman Shaheed Road, were submerged under rainwater. In some localities, standing water reached nearly two feet in depth, turning streets and residential lanes into pools.
Residents said the heavy downpour exposed shortcomings in the performance of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), as the drainage system struggled to cope with the volume of rainwater. The resulting waterlogging affected traffic movement and disrupted routine activities across the city.
Overflowing sewers also led to rainwater entering residential homes in several neighbourhoods, prompting residents to question the effectiveness of public spending on drainage and sewerage projects.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a flood warning and forecast that the current spell of rainfall is likely to continue over the next few days, urging the public to exercise caution, particularly in low-lying areas.
