Metro53 - GUJRAT: Gujrat received 100 millimetres of rainfall as heavy monsoon showers continued through the night and into the day, leaving large parts of the city submerged and disrupting routine life.
According to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), 100mm of rainfall had been recorded so far, while all disposal stations were operating at full capacity to drain accumulated rainwater from low-lying areas.
Waterlogging on the city's roads has remained a recurring problem for decades, with residents continuing to face severe inconvenience during every monsoon season. Despite the launch of new drainage projects around six months ago, the schemes have yet to be completed, leaving the city dependent on its ageing sewerage and drainage infrastructure.
Officials said efforts had been made to improve the existing system by installing new pumps and generators. However, with the monsoon season only beginning and several more spells of rain forecast, concerns remain over the city's ability to cope with further downpours.
Residents, recalling the widespread flooding and disruption witnessed in previous years, expressed fears that the situation could worsen if long-delayed drainage projects are not completed on time. They urged the authorities to expedite the schemes and ensure quality execution to provide a lasting solution to the city's chronic waterlogging problem.
