Metro53 - ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday disposed of the Punjab government's appeal seeking cancellation of the bail granted to former Punjab chief minister and PTI President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi in the alleged illegal recruitments case.
According to court proceedings, Pervaiz Elahi appeared before the Supreme Court in connection with the case. The court also disposed of the Punjab government's appeals against the bail granted to Muhammad Khan Bhatti.
During the hearing, the Supreme Court observed that if the accused fail to appear before the trial court, the trial court is empowered to cancel their bail.
The government's counsel informed the bench that the accused had sought adjournments on 18 occasions. Chief Justice Yahya Afridi questioned why the accused were not appearing before the trial court.
Counsel for Pervaiz Elahi, Ali Zafar, disputed the prosecution's claims, arguing that his client had spent a year in prison and that neither charges had been framed nor evidence presented so far.
Chief Justice Afridi remarked that it was the prosecution's responsibility to present evidence but stressed that the accused must ensure their attendance before the trial court. He added that the court would not allow misuse of legal provisions.
The Supreme Court directed the trial court to proceed with the case and conduct hearings within the next two weeks.
