Metro53 - GUJRAT: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday inaugurated a fleet of 77 electric buses for seven districts across the province via video link, formally launching the Green Bus Service in Gujrat.
The inauguration ceremony in Gujrat was attended by Deputy Commissioner Noor-ul-Ain Qureshi, Punjab Assembly member Abdullah Yousaf, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Qurat-ul-Ain, Assistant Commissioner Abdul Qadeer Zarkoon, PML city president Ali Abrar Jora, Chaudhry Akhlaq Ranjha, SDEO (PEF) Humayun Waraich, Transport Officer Raza Haider, and officials from the revenue, police and other departments.
Under the first phase of the project, Gujrat has received 11 electric buses, with the fleet expected to expand to 28 buses by September.
Initially, the service will operate on the Gujrat–Mangowal and Gujrat–Daulat Nagar routes.
Officials said the fare has been fixed at Rs20 per journey. The buses are equipped with wheelchair ramps and dedicated facilities for senior citizens and persons with disabilities, aiming to provide commuters with a safe, comfortable and environmentally friendly mode of public transport.
The electric bus initiative forms part of the Punjab government's broader efforts to modernise the province's public transport system and promote cleaner, sustainable urban mobility.
