Metro53 - Sydney (Web Desk): Pakistani-born Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a remarkable 15-year Test career that went far beyond achievements on the field.

At the age of 39, Khawaja addressed a long and emotional press conference in which he spoke openly about his cricketing journey, racial discrimination, identity, and inclusion. Born in Pakistan, Usman Khawaja moved to Australia at the age of five and later became the first Muslim cricketer to represent the Australian national team.

Reflecting on his early career, Khawaja revealed that he faced racial bias and felt pressured to hide his identity. He said he tried to blend in and appear like others to secure his place in the team, yet still found himself repeatedly dropped.

He shared that after moving to Queensland in 2012, he embraced his true identity, which had a positive impact on both his personal life and on-field performance. “I am a proud Muslim and I come from Pakistan. I was told because of this that I would never play for Australia, but today I am sitting here,” Khawaja stated.

Khawaja also linked criticism he faced during the recent Ashes series to racial bias, particularly the disproportionate backlash over him playing golf—something he noted other players were never targeted for. He emphasized that similar actions by others did not attract the same scrutiny.

Speaking on diversity, inclusion, and equality in cricket, Khawaja acknowledged progress but said significant challenges still remain. He also addressed the criticism he received for speaking out in support of Palestine, making it clear that he would continue to advocate for unity and humanity rather than hatred.

In his closing remarks, Usman Khawaja said he hopes to be remembered as a good human being, a humble cricketer, and a symbol of hope for young people—especially children who feel different or overlooked.
