Metro53 - Washington (Web Desk) – According to the U.S. Inspector General, the United States allocated $144 billion for Afghanistan over 20 years to support reconstruction. However, corruption within Afghan governments proved to be a major obstacle.
The Inspector General released a report on the 20-year Afghan war and reconstruction, noting that anti-narcotics programs were largely ineffective. Stabilization programs alone cost $4.7 billion, yet results remained disappointing. Following the U.S. withdrawal, $7.1 billion worth of military equipment was left in Afghanistan.
Over four years, the U.S. provided $3.83 billion in aid to the Taliban government. From 2002 to 2021, more than $144 billion was allocated for reconstruction, but corruption consistently hampered progress. Despite spending $7.3 billion on anti-narcotics efforts, programs failed to achieve significant results. Global donors contributed $8.1 billion to UN-led projects.
