Metro53 - LONDON: The London Marathon has been described as witnessing historic performances after reports claimed that two athletes completed the race in under two hours for the first time in an official competition.

According to the claims, Kenyan runner Sebastian Sawe finished the course in 1 hour 59 minutes and 30 seconds, followed closely by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha in 1 hour 59 minutes and 41 seconds.

However, athletics officials and historical records indicate that no official marathon race has yet recorded a sub-two-hour finish. The current official men’s marathon world record is held by Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum, who ran 2:00:35 at the 2023 Chicago Marathon.

Separately, Kenyan legend Eliud Kipchoge famously completed a marathon in under two hours (1:59:40) during the INEOS 1:59 Challenge, but that run was not recognised as an official world record due to controlled pacing conditions.

If confirmed in an official setting, such performances would mark a major milestone in distance running, highlighting continued advances in training, sports science, and endurance capabilities. However, experts urge careful verification of timing and race conditions before record recognition.

The London Marathon remains one of the world’s most prestigious long-distance races, often serving as a stage for elite athletic performances and historic breakthroughs.
