Metro53 - TEHRAN: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday paid tribute to Iran's late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, describing him as a distinguished scholar and statesman whose legacy would be remembered by Muslims around the world.

Speaking to Iranian media during his visit to Tehran, the prime minister said Ayatollah Khamenei had demonstrated steadfastness, courage, patience and foresight throughout his leadership. He said the late Iranian leader served his country with unwavering commitment and sincerity.

"Not only Iran, but millions of Muslims across the world will remember him as a great leader," Mr Sharif said, extending Pakistan's condolences to the Iranian people over the loss.

The prime minister said he had travelled to Iran to convey the sympathies of the government and people of Pakistan following the leader's death and to express solidarity with the bereaved families and those affected by what he described as aggression that also claimed the lives of many Iranian citizens.

Reaffirming Islamabad's support for Tehran, Mr Sharif said Pakistan and Iran shared deep historical, religious and cultural ties.

"Pakistan and Iran are brotherly Islamic countries. Our hearts beat together, and we will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder in every difficult time," he said.

The prime minister concluded by conveying Pakistan's heartfelt condolences and solidarity with the people of Iran on behalf of the nation.
