Metro53 - THARPARKAR (Web Desk): As many as 480 newborn babies have died at Civil Hospital Mithi during the first eight months of the current year, according to hospital records.
According to Dunya News, a total of 2,732 children were admitted to the hospital between January and August. Hospital records show that 70 deaths were reported in January, 39 in February, 54 in March, 47 in April, 65 in May, 75 in June, 69 in July and 61 in August.
During the same period, 1,387 children were discharged after recovery, while 106 patients were referred to other hospitals for further treatment.
Malnutrition, low birth weight and various diseases are among the reported causes of deaths among newborns in the region. Tharparkar has long faced challenges including food insecurity, maternal malnutrition, early marriages and infectious diseases, all of which can increase health risks for mothers and children.
Sources said the Medical Superintendent of Civil Hospital Mithi and the District Health Officer avoided providing complete information about the situation, with both officials reportedly shifting responsibility to each other.
The high number of newborn deaths highlights the serious healthcare and malnutrition challenges facing Tharparkar and raises questions about the availability and effectiveness of medical facilities for vulnerable children.
