Metro53 - Islamabad – President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Barrister Sultan Mahmood, has passed away at the age of 71. He had been receiving treatment in Islamabad after being diagnosed with liver cancer.
According to the spokesperson of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government, the funeral prayer of Barrister Sultan Mahmood will be offered tomorrow at 4:00 PM at the Mirpur Cricket Stadium.
Following his demise, the Azad Kashmir government has announced three days of official mourning.
Barrister Sultan Mahmood was elected President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir on August 25, 2021. Previously, he served as Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir from 1996 to 2001.
It is worth noting that Barrister Sultan Mahmood joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in February 2015. In the legislative assembly elections held a year later, he suffered his first electoral defeat in a 25-year political career. However, he made a political comeback in 2019 by winning the Mirpur by-election and was re-elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly.
