Metro53 - WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said he holds “great respect” for Pakistan, while also making wide-ranging claims about his role in easing global conflicts, including tensions between Pakistan and India.

In remarks to US media, Mr Trump praised Pakistan’s leadership, referring to both the country’s military command and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as “good and respectable”.

The US president further claimed that he had helped prevent multiple conflicts during his tenure, stating that tensions between Pakistan and India were at one point escalating towards a potential nuclear confrontation. He also alleged that several aircraft were downed during the standoff.

However, independent verification of some of these claims remains unclear, and officials from both South Asian countries have not issued immediate statements in response to the remarks.

Mr Trump added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had credited him with helping save “millions of lives” during the crisis.

Analysts note that relations between Pakistan and India have historically remained tense, particularly over longstanding disputes, with periodic escalations drawing international attention.
