Metro53 - GUJRAT: The Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) has launched a large-scale desilting operation at Nala Halsey ahead of the monsoon season in an effort to improve the city’s drainage system and prevent urban flooding.
According to officials, the 16-kilometre-long drain, stretching from the Chenab River to the inner city areas, is being cleaned with heavy machinery for the first time in nearly 20 years. Large quantities of mud, garbage and debris accumulated in the several-foot-deep drain are being removed to ensure smooth flow of rainwater during the upcoming monsoon rains.
Wasa Managing Director Kashan Hafeez Butt is personally supervising the operation. He said all ongoing drainage and sanitation projects across the city would be completed before the start of the monsoon season to avoid water accumulation in residential and commercial areas.
Officials said the restoration of Nala Halsey would not only improve water flow but also have a positive impact on sanitation and the urban environment. Emergency measures are being taken to minimise the risk of urban flooding during heavy rainfall.
