Metro53 - JHELUM: Growing public complaints have emerged in Jhelum over the alleged overcharging, misconduct, and traffic violations by Qingqi rickshaw drivers, with citizens urging authorities to take immediate action.
According to residents, Qingqi drivers operating on routes including Shandar Chowk, Bilal Town, Jada, Jhelum Cantonment, Police Lines, Karimpura, Islamia School, and Mohammadi Chowk have significantly increased fares in recent months. Commuters claim that fares previously charged at Rs50 per passenger have risen to between Rs100 and Rs150 on several routes.
Citizens say the increase has placed an additional burden on low- and middle-income families already struggling with rising living costs. Students, daily wage earners, office workers, women, and elderly passengers are reported to be among those most affected.
Residents have also alleged that some drivers resort to arguments and inappropriate behaviour when passengers refuse to pay the higher fares. According to complaints, women and senior citizens have also faced unpleasant situations while using the service.
Concerns have further been raised over traffic management, with citizens alleging that many Qingqi drivers stop in the middle of roads to pick up and drop off passengers, disrupting traffic flow and increasing the risk of accidents. Reports of reckless and unsafe driving practices have also added to public frustration.
Social and community representatives have called upon the administration, including the Deputy Commissioner of Jhelum, the District Police Officer, traffic police officials, and transport authorities, to regulate fares, take action against overcharging, and ensure strict enforcement of traffic laws.
Residents warned that failure to address the issue could lead to worsening traffic congestion, an increased risk of accidents, and further inconvenience for the public. They urged the authorities to introduce effective measures to protect passengers' rights and improve the city's transport system.
