Metro53 - ISLAMABAD: A tense situation erupted at the Sarhad University campus in Islamabad after an army officer in uniform allegedly opened aerial fire during a student demonstration, prompting police to register a case and the military leadership to initiate an inquiry.
According to student representatives, the protest began over an ongoing dispute between their Head of Department, Dr. Jadoon Khan, and the university's Human Resources (HR) manager. Students gathered under the banner of "Justice for Sir," alleging that the HR manager had mistreated, pushed, and threatened Dr. Jadoon with false legal charges.
The situation deteriorated further when the HR manager—who is the wife of a military officer—arrived at the demonstration site, leading to a heated argument with the demonstrators. Eyewitnesses claimed she physically confronted some students before calling her husband to the scene.
Shortly after, the uniformed military officer arrived on campus. Demonstrators alleged that he initially struck a student with a stick. As the crowd rallied in response to the assault, the officer drew his sidearm and fired shots into the air to disperse the gathering students.
Following the chaotic incident, senior journalist Hamid Mir reported that the Pakistan Army took immediate notice of the altercation, took the officer into custody, and initiated formal disciplinary proceedings.
Meanwhile, Islamabad Police officers arrived at the campus to restore order. Authorities registered a formal case regarding the firing and assured the protesting students that a transparent investigation into the incident will be conducted.
